AMCIP has existed for students of Chalmers University of Technology since 1963 with the purpose to give students genuine work experience within their specific field of education and to create cultural understanding between North America and the Scandinavian countries.  It is a student driven program moved forward by 6 members of the board which are appointed each year. These six then appoint members of the program which usually range between 20 and 30 members.

The program has gone under several different names, most recently USASIP (USA Summer Internship Program), as its initial aim was to supply internships in the United States of America over the summer break. As the program grew this was no longer the case as more and more students were getting jobs in Canada and the length of the internships were increasing from 3 months up to 1 year. Thus the name was changed to AMCIP.
